Brighton Makers
Etsy, a leading e-commerce platform, enlisted the services of MHF Creative to create a series of social media videos featuring two makers based in Brighton. The objective of the project was to produce a large batch of video content that could be repurposed into standalone short social media videos. The aim was to give Etsy's audience an insight into the makers' lives and creative design approaches while aligning with Etsy's values of community and sustainability. Additionally, the video content needed to focus on Christmas, a key commercial time for the platform. In this case study, we will explore the client's objectives, MHF Creative's approach, and the successful outcomes of the project.
Etsy approached MHF Creative with several challenges. They needed a large batch of social media videos featuring two makers based in Brighton. The goal was to maximize the filming day and shoot a variety of video content styles that could be repurposed into stand-alone short social media videos. The content needed to provide the audience with an insight into the maker's lives and creative design approaches. Additionally, the videos had to align with Etsy's values of community and sustainability, with one focused around Christmas, a key commercial time for the ecommerce platform.
Etsy also required shorter and more concise video content as that was the content driving more engagement than long-form videos.
To meet Etsy's challenges, MHF Creative took a structured approach to the social media video campaign. First, we divided the campaign into different video types, including Day in the Life, ASMR, Sustainability, Community, Make With Me, and Christmas videos. We then filmed each maker over the course of one day, following them from their homes to their studios. The filming day involved capturing interview content, voiceover content, B-roll footage, and footage of the designers making their products.
Our team wanted the conversation and tone of the film to be as natural as possible. Shiv and Emer were fairly new to being on camera, so it was important for us that they felt comfortable both on and off camera. We made sure to create a relaxed environment where the makers could be themselves and share their unique stories.
To achieve this natural environment, we used a small three-person crew and two cameras, which allowed us to focus on them both together and separately without having to re-record. We recognized the importance of shorter video content for driving engagement on social media, so we ensured that each video was cut down into standalone short social media videos that provided insight into the makers' lives and creative design approaches.
Additionally, we made sure to align the video content with Etsy's values of community and sustainability while also creating content focused on the Christmas season, a key commercial time for the ecommerce platform. As part of our approach, we added captions to all the videos to make them more accessible to a wider audience. We also made use of different video formats, such as square and vertical videos, to optimize the content for different social media platforms.
By working closely with the client and understanding their objectives, we were able to produce a batch of high-quality social media videos that aligned with their values, engaged their target audience, and showcased the unique stories of each maker.
